This week’s research review focuses on dexamethasone plus B vitamins IM for low back pain

A study examined the efficacy of dexamethasone alone versus dexamethasone plus complex B vitamins in the therapy of low back pain.
The trial initially included 33 patients. Three dropped out due to adverse effects. Group 1  (dexamethasone plus complex B vitamins) showed a significant decrease in pain and improvement in muscle spasm compared with Group 2 (dexamethasone 4 mg alone). Group 1 received B vitamins by intramuscular injection (thiamin 100 mg, pyridoxine 100 mg, cyanocobalamin 1000 µg) once a day for 7 days.
Dexamethasone plus complex B vitamins were found to be superior to dexamethasone alone in the therapy of low back pain. (Medina Santillán et al., 2000)
